I spent atleast three hours building my registry and still forgot half of it. Nobody warns you that walking into Buy Buy Baby with a scan gun feels empowering right up until you're staring at seventeen different bottle options and your brain completely shuts down. The stores are designed that way. More overwhelm, more stuff in the cart.
This isn't that kind of list. This is the checklist I wish a real mom had handed me before I started scanning. The things you'll actually reach for at 3am, the things nobody thinks to register for, and the things you can absolutely skip. Save it before you open your registry. You'll come back to it.

Quick Picks 🔥
Short on time? These are the registry essentials every first-time mom actually needs.
🥇 #1 The Sound Machine That Saved My Sanity I put this on my registry because everyone said to. Then my baby slept through a garbage truck at 6am and I almost sobbed with gratitude. The Hatch Rest is the one splurge on this entire list you will never regret. 👉 Shop on Nordstrom
💤 #2 The Swaddle Everyone Talks About (For Good Reason) My baby went from screaming to asleep in under two minutes the first time I used this. I bought three more the next day. Add it to your registry and thank yourself at 2am. 👉 Shop on Amazon
👀 #3 A Baby Monitor You Can Actually Trust I checked this screen 47 times the first night home. No exaggeration. Get one with a clear picture, good night vision, and a wide angle. You will live on this thing for the first year. 👉 Shop on Amazon
✈️ Bonus Pick #1 — The Bassinet Nobody Thinks to Register For Most moms register for one bassinet. I registered for two and it changed everything. The Baby Delight folds flat, lives in your living room, goes in an overhead bin, and means you never have to choose between watching your baby nap and actually getting something done. 👉 Shop on Amazon
🛻 Bonus Pick #2 — The Stroller Worth Every Penny The Nuna TRVL is the one you see every stylish mom pushing in every airport. One second fold, fits overhead, pairs with the car seat, and holds its resale value better than almost anything else on this list. Register for it shamelessly. 👉 Shop on Nordstrom
Sleep Essentials 😴
This is the category where first-time moms either get it right on the registry or spend $200 postpartum in a panic. Register for it now.

Bassinet-->Register for Two
Controversial opinion: register for two bassinets. One for your bedroom, one for wherever you spend your days. Because you are not tiptoeing to the nursery every time the baby needs to nap while you're trying to eat a meal with two hands. For home, the SNOO is the gold standard. Yes it's expensive, yes it's worth it. It auto-responds to your baby's cries with motion and sound so you actually sleep. Register for it shamelessly.
For travel or your living room, the Baby Delight bedside bassinet is the one frequent-flyer moms swear by. It folds down, fits in an overhead bin, and doubles as a play yard. If you're a travel mama (or just want to be), this one's a non-negotiable add.

Sound Machine
Non-negotiable. Babies are used to noise. They just spent nine months listening to your heartbeat. Silence actually startles them. The Hatch Rest is worth the splurge because it grows with your baby and you can control it from your phone at 3am without moving a muscle.
Swaddle Set
Add at least two styles. Every baby is different and you won't know which one works until they're here. The Ollie Swaddle and a basic muslin set covers your bases.
Feeding & Nursing 🍼
This category overwhelmed me more than any other. Here's what you actually need and what to skip.

Nursing Bra
Register for at least two. You will live in these. I know I did all the way 1.5 years post pregnancy. Look for one that works as a sleep bra too so you're not changing at 3am. The Kindred Bravely is the one that consistently tops every new mom recommendation thread.
Haakaa Silicone Pump
This little $30 device will save you more milk than you think. Attach it to the opposite side while you nurse and let it collect the letdown passively. Every breastfeeding mom needs one and almost nobody puts it on their registry.
Philips Avent Glass Bottle Set
Register for the set that includes both the wide neck short bottles for the newborn stage and the tall bottles as they grow. Glass over plastic. Easier to sterilize, no microplastic concerns, and they last through multiple kids. This is a registry staple that gift-givers love to buy too.
Dr. Brown's Deluxe Bottle Warmer
Cold breast milk at 3am is a problem this solves in under 5 minutes. The Dr. Brown's Deluxe warms bottles and pouches evenly without hot spots, which matters more than you think when a hungry newborn is screaming. Register for it. You will use it every single day.
Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair
This is the one worth registering for without apology. It adjusts from infant all the way through adulthood. Yes, adulthood. So you're not buying three different chairs over five years. It's an investment piece that looks beautiful in any kitchen and gift-givers love a splurge item with longevity. Put it on the registry and let someone else pay for it.
Bottle Brush + Drying Rack
Unglamorous but essential. The OXO bottle brush and Boon drying rack are the ones every mom ends up with eventually. Just register for them now.
Diapering 🍑
You will change approximately 2,500 diapers in the first year. Set yourself up properly.

WaterWipes Large Pack
99.9% water, one drop of fruit extract. That's it. For newborn skin, nothing comes cleaner or gentler. Register for the large pack and don't let anyone talk you into a different brand for the first three months.
Munchkin Secure Grip Waterproof Changing Pad
A changing pad that doesn't slide while you're wrestling a squirmy newborn is non-negotiable. The Munchkin has a contoured shape and waterproof cover. Easy to wipe down at 2am when things go sideways.
Changing Pad Cover
Register for two. One on, one in the wash. The grey jersey knit style is soft against baby skin and looks clean in any nursery.
Diaper Pail
Don't skip this. Your nose will thank you. The Ubbi is the one worth registering for. It uses regular trash bags and actually contains the smell.
Save this post before you open your registry. You will come back to it. Trust me.
Bath Time 🛁
Newborns don't need much for bath time. But what you do need, you need to get right.

Tubby Todd All Over Ointment (AOO) Set
Already a Posh Mama favorite. The AOO is the one that clears baby eczema, cradle cap, and dry skin without a single harsh ingredient. Register for the full set. You'll use it head to toe from day one.
Noodle & Boo Baby Bath Set
This is the one you put on the registry and hope someone splurges on for you. Noodle & Boo is pediatrician-tested, ultra-gentle, and smells like a luxury spa. Which you will desperately need to feel like a human again during those early newborn baths. The full set covers wash, shampoo, and lotion so you're not hunting for three separate products.
Frida Baby 4-in-1 Grow-with-Me Tub
You need a tub that works from newborn through sitting up on their own. The Frida Baby transitions through every stage so you're not buying a new one every few months.
True Temp Thermometer (The Duck)
It's a bath thermometer, room thermometer, and baby thermometer in one. You will use this every single bath and every time you think baby feels warm at midnight. Register for it. It's the kind of thing you don't think to buy until you desperately need it.
Hooded Towels Register for at least two. Baby skin dries out fast and a good hooded towel wraps them up immediately after the bath. The Little Unicorn ones are thick, beautiful, and last through multiple kids.
Baby WashclothsUltra soft, separate from your regular washcloths. Register for a pack of 6 minimum.
On-the-Go 🚗
This is the category where first-time moms overspend or underprepare. Here's the list that actually matters.

Car Seat + Stroller
Non-negotiable and legally required. You cannot leave the hospital without one. One thing nobody tells you: what you need in a newborn car seat is completely different from what you'll need at the toddler stage.
The Nuna TRVL Set is the one worth registering for shamelessly. It's a complete travel system. Car seat, stroller, and if you can swing it, add the Nuna TRVL Bassinet too.
Everything is designed to work together seamlessly, it folds in one second flat, and it fits in an overhead bin. For the travel mama, this is the system. We ended up with the full set and it was worth every penny.

Baby Carrier
You will want your hands free. This is not optional. Two carriers worth registering for because they serve different purposes.
The BabyBjörn Baby Carrier is the one you'll grab for quick errands and travel. Structured, intuitive, no learning curve. You can put it on half asleep and figure it out. Also a really good option for dad carrying.
The Solly Wrap is the soft wrap that feels like wearing your baby like a hug. Full transparency: the comfort with a wrap comes with experience. It took me a few tries to get the hang of it, but once you do, it's unmatched for long stretches and travel days when you need your hands completely free.
Register for both. They're not redundant. They're for different moments.

Diaper Bag
Get one that doesn't look like a diaper bag. The Dagne Dover Diaper Backpack is the one that earns its keep long after the newborn stage. Yes it fits diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes, but it also fits your laptop, your lunch, and your entire life as a working parent. Hands free, structured, and the one you'll still be reaching for at the office two years later. Register for it without guilt.
Postpartum for Mom 🤍
You grew a human. This section is for you.

Nursing Bra
You will live in this, literally. Register for at least two and do not cheap out here. You're wearing this through night feeds, nap time, and every moment in between. Prioritize soft, stretchy, and wireless. Your only job is comfort.
Postpartum Belly Wrap
Your core has been through something. The belly wrap supports your abdomen in those first weeks and most moms say it's the thing they didn't register for and desperately wished they had. It's one of those things you need a few days after surgery. I personally love the warm tan color.
Frida Mom Labor, Delivery + Postpartum Recovery Kit
Nobody tells you about the first bathroom trip after delivery. This kit has you covered. The Frida Mom Hospital Kit covers everything from first contraction to that moment. A delivery gown, disposable underwear, ice maxi pads, witch hazel cooling liners, perineal healing foam, and the upside down peri bottle. It comes pre-packed in a toiletry bag so you pull it out of your hospital bag and everything is right there. Skip building your own. This is the one you register for and actually open with relief.
Nipple Cream
The Earth Mama Nipple Cream gave me peace of mind for nursing, for pumping, for massaging when I was engorged. It was during pregnancy that I realized how crunchy I am. It mattered to me what was going into my baby's mouth. I didn't have to worry with this one. Register for the two pack.
Comfortable Loungewear Set
This is the time for things to be functional AND cute. This is also the time for the softest thing you have ever put on your body. Register for a nursing-friendly loungewear set that you genuinely look forward to putting on. Because some days that'll be the highlight. Modal fabric, relaxed fit, easy nursing access. Make it good. Make it luxe.
Breast Pump Bag
If you're planning to pump at work, register for a discreet pump bag that doesn't scream "I'm carrying milk." You want a bag that works for the pumping and working mom. The best part is that it includes space for the breast pump and the laptop.
What I'd Skip 🚫
Honesty is the whole point of this list. That said I'd figure I'd give you some of the "real".
Wipe Warmer — Sounds dreamy, creates dependency. Your baby will scream at every diaper change outside your home when the wipes aren't warm. Skip it.
Newborn Shoes — Adorable. Completely pointless. They can't walk, the shoes fall off, and you'll spend $40 on something worn twice for photos.
Too Many Newborn Size Clothes — Babies outgrow newborn sizing in weeks. Register for 0-3 and 3-6 month sizing instead.
Bottle Sterilizer — Your dishwasher does this. Save the counter space.
Baby Food Maker — You don't need this until month six and by then you'll know exactly what you actually want. Don't register for it now.
